Adding and Subtracting

When adding or subtracting one number from another, we only have to work with one sign, either a plus (+) sign or a minus (-) sign. So when we have more than one sign right next to each other, how do we decide which one to use?

Here is a chart to assist you:

Two Signs . . . . Become One Sign
+ + . . . . . . . . . . . . +
+ - . . . . . . . . . . . . . -
- + . . . . . . . . . . . . . -
- - . . . . . . . . . . . . . . +

Try these practice problems by combining pairs of signs and solving.

1. 4 + (+12) =
2. -3 - (+15) =
3. 7 - (-6) =
4. 1 + (-8) =
5. 7 + (-2) - (-9) =
6. 14 - (+3) + (-5)=
7. -17 + (+30) - (-10) =
